Key takeaways
- GEO/AEO/LLMO is about being quoted by AI answers, not just ranked in a list.
- Structure beats volume: clear answers, schema, and citable facts win.
- The same content discipline feeds Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude at once.
- You can start measuring AI citations in an afternoon — before you write anything new.
What GEO, AEO and LLMO actually mean
Three acronyms, one shift. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is making sure generative answers — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews — cite your pages. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is structuring content so it gets pulled into direct answers and featured snippets. LLMO (Large Language Model Optimization) is shaping content for how language models read, chunk and trust it.
In practice they overlap heavily, and I work all three as one motion. If you want the deep technical version, I keep a living reference on the GEO / AEO / LLMO service page. This post is the strategy behind it.
Why it matters more than rankings now
Google's AI Overviews already answer a large share of informational queries without a click. Buyers increasingly open ChatGPT or Perplexity first and ask, in plain language, "who is the best CRM developer in Hyderabad?" or "how do I market a cloud kitchen?" The model returns a synthesised answer and cites a handful of sources. If you are not one of those sources, you are invisible at the exact moment of intent.
Ranking #1 for a keyword nobody clicks is a vanity metric. Being the source an AI quotes is the new front page.
The good news: the models pull from the indexed web. The work is the same shape as good SEO — it just holds a higher standard for clarity, structure and trust.
The 6-step playbook
This is the exact order I run it in, because each step compounds on the last.
1. Answer the question in the first two sentences
Models reward pages that state the answer up front, then expand. Lead with a direct, quotable definition or number. Bury it under 600 words of preamble and you lose the citation to a competitor who got to the point.
2. Make every important fact structured
Add FAQPage, Article, HowTo and Organization schema. Structured data is how machines read your claims with confidence. This is non-negotiable, and it is the same hygiene that good technical SEO demands.
3. Write in citable chunks
Short, self-contained paragraphs. Clear H2/H3 questions. Tables for comparisons. Lists for steps. A model can lift a clean three-sentence block and quote it; it cannot quote a rambling wall of text.
4. Build entity and author trust
Models weigh who is saying it. A named author with a real bio, consistent sameAs profiles, and a track record (case studies, not claims) raises the odds you get cited over an anonymous content farm.
5. Earn third-party mentions
LLMs triangulate. If three independent sites describe you the same way, the model trusts it. Founder-led LinkedIn, genuine PR, and being listed in real directories all feed this — not link schemes.
6. Feed the content engine, then keep it fresh
Pillar pages, answer pages and comparison pages on the questions buyers actually ask. This is where a real content marketing system pays off — published, dated, and updated, so the freshness signal stays alive.
How to measure AI visibility
You cannot improve what you do not watch. Three cheap checks:
- Ask the models directly. Query ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews with your category + city. Note who gets cited.
- Track branded mentions. Search your brand inside Perplexity weekly; it shows sources explicitly.
- Watch referral logs. Traffic from
chatgpt.com,perplexity.aiand Google AI surfaces is now a real, growing channel.
Track these monthly alongside organic traffic. AI citations often move faster than classic Google rankings — frequently inside four to eight weeks of publishing the right page.
Where to start this week
Pick your three highest-intent pages — usually a core service and two money pages. Rewrite the opening to answer the question in two sentences. Add or fix schema. Break the body into citable chunks. Then ask the models your category question and screenshot the baseline. That is a half-day of work that tells you exactly where you stand.
If you would rather have it done as one system — site, schema, content and measurement — that is the GEO / AEO / LLMO engagement, and it pairs naturally with SEO and content.
